Nicholas S. Firfires Backcover Painting for Zane Grey’s Western Magazine

I picked up this old issue of Zane Grey’s Western Magazine at a local antique shop a couple of years ago because of the back cover painting. It’s called After a Maverick and was painted by Nicholas S. Firfires. He lived the cowboy life and later became an artist painting the subjects he knew best. In his own words: “I soon realized that painting a bronc stomper breaking a horse was more important to me than doing the job myself.” He later became a founding member of the Cowboy Artists of America.

Elsewhere in this issue of Zane Grey’s are delightful drawings illustrating the various short stories and articles. Being from the South the last story caught my eye with its fun play on words of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind. 🤠
